Busy Weekend

This is what Val and I accomplished over the weekend:

  • Cleaned up the mess left after all of the work on the media cabinet
  • Laundry
  • Showed the 22nd street house to many prospective tenants
  • Grocery shopping
  • Much paperwork
  • Bank deposit
  • Party supplies for LLW
  • Last-minute treasurer duties for LLW
  • Cooked a yummy dinner on Saturday night
  • Exiles orientation
  • Exiles business meeting
  • Tried to keep up with recordings from the Olympics

Wow, tired just thinking about it!

Lunch with Francesca

Had a nice dim sum lunch at ABC Seafood in Foster City with Francesca. She invited a surprise guest, Barbara Yee, with whom Francesca and I worked at Xerox many years ago. It was great to catch up.

Tuba

Last week I dropped my tuba off at Manor Music because, well, it’s just a rental and it has to be returned each summer for cleaning. I’ve been considering buying a tuba so I wasn’t sure if I wanted to rent for another year, but then I checked out the prices. Turns out it’s not unusual to pay $3000-$8000 for a tuba! So I figure I’ll keep renting, especially since they pay for repairs and yearly cleaning. Last Saturday I got one almost identical to the other one, only in better shape.

Media Cabinet!

Our new media cabinet, the last of the cabinetry and the last of the major home improvements, got installed on Saturday the 21st. Irene Pepping, the fabulously talented cabinet maker, supervised Cutberto and Mario doing the installation, and Val was in charge of taking apart the A/V components. I returned from my concert at around 2:30, just as the installation was finished, and Val was starting to reconnect everything.

Fast forward to 11:30pm. After 9 additional hours, 1 trip to Orchard Supply, a couple of arguments, and a slot of sweat and aggravation, we were able to watch TV. Val has been amazingly diligent in getting everything configured (changed some components, added our new blu-ray player and organized (horrible mess of cables). It’s still not all done, but excellent progress has been made. The most fun thing is the blu-ray player’s access to the internet.

Band Concert – it was hot!

I played tuba with the West Bay Community Band at the Relay for Life in Cupertino on Saturday. After two hours in 97 degree heat I was ready to get in the car and have the A/C on full blast! It was a fun concert, for a good cause. Picture here.

Jennifer & Selena visit

Jennifer & Selena visited on Sunday the 15th. It’s great having regular visits with them, and this one was no exception. We had a great time playing the new Mega Europe version of Ticket to Ride, and of course catching up on each others’ lives.

Shots in my back

Got cortizone injections in to the bottom 2 facet joints in my back yesterday afternoon. Damage there is from a 25-year-old injury (fell on my tailbone while roller skating) and getting bad/no treatment (take pain pill and lose weight… great advice, eh?). Now the disks are compressed and the bones are developing arthritis.

Am already feeling some relief from the shots.

No More Storage Unit!

With a LOT of help from Cutberto and Mario, Val and I emptied our storage unit on the 7th. With me coordinating downstairs and Val organizing upstairs, we were able to get almsot everything into the attic in an organized fashion so we’ll be able to find everything. Still lots of room up there! There are a dozen boxes in the house (DVDs, records, and books) and another 5-10, plus some furniture, in the garage (stuff to be gone through), but it’s looking great! And no more monthly expense. We were exhausted afterwards, but we did an awesome job!

Weird July 4th

No fireworks, no BBQ. Quiet day at home and a relatively short trip to our storage unit to scope out the Big Move. It was nice to have a relaxing day in the middle of the week.
